Did You Know...

that Spectacular Bid won the 1980 Woodward Stakes in a walkover, because no other horse wanted to face him.

February Featured Site

The Stretch Bar & Grill, Fort Saskatchewan, is our Featured Site for the month of February.  If you haven’t been to The Stretch, it’s definitely worth the drive.

This bar breathes horse racing.  It definitely has the small town feel, and there is always someone there with a great story.  The clientele includes many of the industries best handicappers, horsemen and horse owners.  If you stop in on the right day, you may even catch Brandon Campbell, one of Western Canada’s leading drivers, bartending at The Stretch.

Mike McAllister, Kelly Hoerdt and Tanis Klemke bought the bar in the fall of 2008, and opened in September under the name “The Stretch Bar & Grill”.  The group did extensive renovations that went from their hardwood flooring all the way up to new ceiling tiles. Under the helm of McAllister & Hoerdt, as well as Henry Kilbach and Roy Rasmussen, they also brought the return of a HOT site in Fort Saskatchewan, which had been on hiatus since mid- May.  The site has been thriving since, and players are returning to see the bar in an improved light.

The site is primarily self serve, with a friendly teller on the weekends for the Northlands card and major race days.  The Stretch has a unique layout, with a moderately private room in the back equipped with 12 TVs dedicated to racing.  However, the whole bar is wired for simulcast; you can watch your race from any seat in the house.

Hungry?  The food at The Stretch is second to none.  The menu features food to satisfy every palate, ranging from soups & salads to burgers, steaks, nachos & perogies; and all day breakfast seven days a week.  The $9.95 Steak & Eggs is a great beginning or end to any weekend.

The Stretch is guaranteed to keep you entertained.  They feature live bands every Friday night, Karaoke Tuesdays & Saturdays, and are the only bar in Fort Saskatchewan to show the UFC Pay Per Views.  Drop by and ask about their weekly “Gong Show” or their annual “Miss Stretch Bar & Grill” contest!  The bar also features VLTs, a pool table and a licensed patio.

The ownership has taken this bar to new levels, and there is definitely growth on the horizon.  If you still know The Stretch as the old Union Hall, Branches or LeeLynn’s, it’s definitely time to take a trip “out to the Fort”.
