My Oak picks, Random Ponderings on KD136.

Newsflash

Well, the draw was made... but does the post position really matter in this caliber of horses?  Does Sidney's Candy really stand less of a chance leaving from 20 than Lookin At Lucky leaving from 1?  Or is the outside looking in a better position to be in than up against the rail getting jostled for position? I think it will all depend on how they break.  And with a 60% of rain, it could be anyone's race.

Today, I'm focusing on the Oaks...I'm picking Amen Hallelujah... I know that Blind Luck is the best horse on paper... but in a fourteen horse field, its hard to justify betting a 6/5 morning line.  Blind Luck is a great horse, but she isn't unbeatable.  Off the top of my head, I know that she has been beaten by Crisp, Evening Jewel and Beautician.  That being said, looking at the horses, I'm keying 13 with 5/11/7.

Rachel Alexandra is running in La Troienne Stakes on April 30 (Race 6 on the Oaks card)... Drew post position 4.  Racing against Zardana.. definitely worth watching.

A few facts that are mixing in my mind...

  • Sidney's Candy has never raced on the dirt
  • Ice Box hasn't started in the last 6 weeks
  • Pletcher is 0 for 24 in ten years of trying to create a Derby winner
  • Devil May Care is the first filly entered in the KD since Eight Belles in 2008
  • Pletcher trained Rags to Riches, the filly who won the Belmont on 2007... Valazquez was aboard that day.
  • Jackson Bend finished second to Eskendereya in the Wood Memorial, beating Awesome Act
  • Super Saver and Conveyance are both super fast, but have never had to pass a horse in their lifetime.

Good luck this weekend!

Kelli
